GREENTREE ECOPARK

Greentree Ecopark transforms a 415-acre former mining property in Middle River into a landmark model of environmentally restorative development. Sixty percent of the site — roughly 250 acres — is permanently dedicated to green energy and ecological uses that give back to the land and the community. At its heart is a 10-megawatt community solar installation spanning 60 acres, part of the Maryland Community Solar Program, generating enough clean electricity to power approximately 2,000 homes and offering BGE account holders a 10–25% credit on their electric bills. The eco-park also establishes a 40-acre wetland bank — the largest in the watershed — restoring native habitat and improving groundwater, alongside a 70-acre forest bank, the largest in Baltimore County, where native trees are planted into permanent conservation easements to improve air quality and shelter wildlife. An additional 80 acres of existing forest is placed into permanent conservation, protecting healthy, mature woodland that could otherwise have been cleared under the site’s active mining permit. Together, these initiatives make Greentree Ecopark a rare example of land development that restores, preserves, and generates renewable energy for generations to come.
